2006 Scovie Awards Report

by Margaret Henderson

This year there were a lot of new competitors. Ashburn Sauce Co., a first time entrant, won the Grand Prize in the tasting division.  They are the first company to win the Grand Prize with a Stir-Fry Sauce. Big Rick's BBQ, which won the Grand Prize in the Advertising & Marketing Division, also received three awards in the tasting division.

The company with the most wins once again was Garden Fresh Gourmet Salsa Co. with an outstanding thirteen Scovie Awards!  Unlike in prior years, five of those wins were in categories other than salsa.  They also had the most number of total entries, proving the theory that multiple entries increase the chance of winning many awards.

Several other first time entrants had exceptional results including Crazy Mother Pucker's Hot Sauce with seven Scovies!  Also notable was TorchBearer Sauces, Prairie Pride Farms of Minnesota, and The Whiskey Island Pirate Shop, all with three Scovies in a variety of categories.

Uncle Brutha's Gourmet Foods showed how versatile their Fire Sauce No. 9 is by winning in three different categories with the same product.  They also received a Scovie for their Fire Sauce No. 10.

The largest categories again this year were Salsa Mild/Medium and Hot Sauce Habanero each with a record number of entries.  The Barbecue Sauce division continues to grow, especially in the area of American Style--HOT.  Perhaps the most surprising category is the Chips division.  Apparently chips are no longer just for dipping, but are becoming a taste of their own.  Entries included Sesame Tortilla and Chilipeno Ranch among others.

A number of records were set.  The Jalapeno Ketchup Co. is the only company that has won every single year from 1998 through 2006. Buffalo Wild Wings has won every year since 2000.  Jillipepper, Byron Bay Chilli Company and Woody's Bar-B-Q Sauce Company have placed every year since 2001, and Garden Fresh Salsa has won every year since 2002.

And the following have won a Scovie for the past three years: Porky's Gourmet, El Pinto, McGinn's Pistachio Tree Ranch, Applecreek Farms, Cowgirl Chocolates, Demitri's Bloody Mary Seasonings, and Pepperville Brand Foods.

All in all, 2006 was another great year for the Scovies!
