New Mexico Book Awards

Saturday night at the NMBA Banquet, I was thrilled to learn that I had one won two awards, Best Cookbook for Cuisines of the Southwest (Golden West Publishers), and Best Novel--Adventure or Drama for Avenging Victorio (Rio Grande Books). It's just my 15 seconds of fame, but it sure felt great! Time constraints prevented me from delivering my winner's speech: "Because of these awards, I am postponing my retirement because I want to spend less time with my family." ;-) 

The keynote speaker at the New Mexico Book Awards was David Morrell, and I really enjoyed sitting at the same table with him.  He's the guy who invented the character Rambo in his book First Blood (1972).  While working on the book, he was drawing a blank on the name of his protagonist when his wife came back from shopping with some heirloom apples that are grown in upstate New York.  The variety is called 'Rambo', and the rest of the story is history.  Visit David at his site, here.  He lives in Santa Fe, so we'll get together soon.


2009 Scovie Awards Winners Announced

Congratulations to the Grand Prize Winners of the 2009 Scovie Awards.  The Tasting Division winner was Bon Bon Bakery for their Chile Verde Ganache with Sweet Corn, which also won 1st place for Sweet Heat: Candy/Cakes/ Pastries/Cookies.  The Marketing Division winner was Treasure Valley Salsa for their Black Bean & Corn Salsa product label.  You can check out all the Scovie Winners here.

Harald and the Great Pumpkin

Harald, our European editor, reports:  "I'm hugging a 396.4 kg (873 lb.) pumpkin, grown in Gluecksburg, northern Germany.  It was voted most beautiful this year, and 8th place for weight. That's a lot of pumpkin soup, and a hell of a carving job for Halloween, which has become increasingly popular over here the past couple of years."



At the New Mexico State Fair, Fiery Foods & BBQ editor Gwyneth Doland assists 1546 other chile enthusiasts create the World's Longest Ristra at the NM Department of Agriculture building.

Volunteers help by hanging the ristra, first vertically....

And then horizontally, for a total length of 157 feet, 7 inches.   The ristra was assembled in 7 hours by an enthusiastic crowd of chileheads, including many children.  "They are the future of chile in New Mexico," said NMDA spokesperson James Ditmore, who led the ristra project.  "We will break this ristra record next year," he added.  --Dave DeWitt
